Crowns are a restorative option that can help improve the appearance and function of your smile. Crowns are placed over damaged, misshapen, or heavily stained teeth to help provide additional support, a more even biting surface, or just a more pleasant aesthetic.
Restorative treatments like crowns are just some of the affordable dental services Castle Dental offers. We’re proud to provide comprehensive dental care to all patients of any age, so that you and your family can enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Getting a dental crown typically takes place over two appointments. First, your dentist will:
Crowns come in a variety of materials, and your dentist will decide which crown is best for you based on the location of the tooth–including what type of tooth–and the extent of the damage that needs to be treated.
After administering a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding oral tissue, the dentist will take an impression of your tooth for the crown and reshape and smooth the tooth so the crown will fit over it properly and not interfere with your bite. A temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth while you wait for the permanent crown to come in and your second appointment.
(While you have the temporary crown, it’s important to avoid sticky or crunchy foods, floss with care, and chew on the opposite side of your mouth to protect it and keep it from shifting.)
Once the temporary crown is removed, the tooth will be cleaned and prepared for the permanent crown.
The permanent crown will be placed over the tooth with dental cement or bonding and filed and smoothed to make sure there are no sharp edges and your bite is still aligned properly.
You should be able to return to your normal activities following the second appointment. You may experience some slight sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, especially in the treated tooth and surrounding tissue, but this should subside within two weeks. Be sure to brush and floss twice daily and make and keep any dental checkup appointments so the crowned tooth can be monitored alongside your overall dental health.
If you do experience pain during chewing, jaw pain, movement in the crown or feel sharp edges be sure to notify your dentist immediately.
