Valentine’s Day is about telling someone you care, not about spending money.

Give Hallmark the boot this year and opt for these personalized DIY gifts. DIY crafts will make perfect gifts and your recipient will feel even more special knowing you made them yourself.

1. Heart-Shaped Tea Bags
Warm someone up by adding a handwritten note to a tea bag. Cut two hearts out of red construction paper. Write a short message on one of the hearts. Next, remove a tea-bag tag and, at the end of the string, affix two hearts, back-to-back, using double-sided tape or a stapler. Package bags to give as a present, or steep one in hot water and serve.

2. Felt Coffee Cup Sleeve
Your recipient will love a reusable coffee cup sleeve. It will protect their hands and helps save the environment from unnecessary waste! Just measure and cut your felt using fabric scissors, wrap around your sample cup and pin. Then slide it off and sew closed. Trim the seam, then add any heart or other embellishments with glue.

3. Felt Fortune Cookies
These cookies are a fun way to deliver a note to your special someone, that they can keep forever! Using fabric scissors, cut a 4.5″ diameter circle out of felt. Cut a matching ribbon slightly shorter. Using wire cutters, cut a piece of floral wire slightly shorter than the ribbon. Adhere the wire to the middle of the felt using craft glue, then cover with the ribbon. Let dry for 30 minutes. To get the cookie shape, fold the felt circle in half using the wire as a guide. Then fold the sides toward each other, bending the wire at its halfway point. Don’t forget to sneak a paper note “fortune” and a few candies inside each cookie!

4. Felt Heart Hat
Don’t forget the little ones in your life! Show them some love with this embellished cap that will keep them toasty. Simply cut two large hearts from felt, then sew them to a solid cap, or use fabric glue.

5. Flowers and Candy Bouquet
Candy and flowers are the quintessential Valentine’s treats, but here’s a fun way to make these gifts a little more special. The secret is using 2 vases, one that’s at least an inch narrower than the other. Place the smaller vase inside the other, then fill the gap in between with candy. Cinnamon candies or conversation hearts work perfectly! Fill the inside vase halfway up with water. Secure the stems of a tight bunch of flowers, trim if necessary, place in the vase and enjoy!
