When trying to eat right, it can be hard to not spend a lot of money.

Getting the most nutritional foods on a budget starts with a little extra planning before you shop. Don’t let money be the reason you don’t eat healthy! There are many ways you can save money on the foods that will help you eat right. Here are some budget-friendly tips for eating healthy!

Plan what you’re going to eat
Before you go to the grocery store, have a plan of what your meals and snacks will be for the next week. This way, you are aware of the exact items you need per meal. Check to see what foods you already have and make a list of what you need. When you shop with a list, you are less likely to buy items you don’t need.

Determine where to shop
Check the newspaper, online, and in-store for sales and coupons especially when you need expensive ingredients. While at the store, make sure you compare prices of different brands and different sizes to see which has a lower unit price so you are spending your money wisely.

Focus on nutritious, low-cost foods

Certain foods tend to be less expensive, so you can make the most of your money by cooking foods that include the following healthy items: beans, peas, lentils, sweet or white potatoes, eggs, peanut butter, tuna, oats, brown rice, and quinoa. This way, you can save money while still eating healthy.

Watch portion sizes
Use smaller plates, bowls, and glasses to stick with portion sizes that will help keep you on track. Half of your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, and the other half should be whole grains, lean meats, poultry, seafood or beans. This ‘half plate’ rule will help you eat a balanced meal and control your portions.

Cook more, eat out less
Food prepared at home is just cheaper and more nutritious than eating out, even at a quality restaurant. Since you prepare it, you know what goes in it! You also have full control of portion sizes.

Grocery shopping on a budget is possible if you plan ahead! There is no reason eating healthy has to be expensive. With these tips, you will be able to stick to a healthy diet while not breaking the bank!
