Not all summer vacations are truly relaxing.

Battling throngs of other tourists, spending hours driving on the road, or sitting on a plane might not be what you’re looking for. Here are a couple vacation ideas off the beaten path, but sure to make a memorable trip.

Stay at a working farm. Hear us out while it might not immediately sound like the vacation of your dreams, spending time on a working farm and eating fruits and vegetables right off the farm is rewarding in a way we don’t often experience in our daily lives. There are several working farms across the US that offer farms stays. If you’re traveling solo or with the family, interested in country charm, farm-to-table eating or apple picking, you can find the perfect place for your getaway.

Pay in forward. Volunteer tourism, or voluntourism, is one of the fastest-growing trends in tourism today. What could feel better than spending a few days away from the daily grind to make a positive impact on the lives of others? There are many opportunities, both domestic and international, to help build homes and schools, work with orphans, or teach English.

Perfect the staycation. How often do you get to enjoy everything your hometown has to offer? Instead of traveling away from home, take some time off to explore the hidden gems and hot spots you never get a chance to visit. Just be sure to treat your staycation like a real vacation. Disconnect from email and TV so you can really relax and enjoy your city.
