Which Kind Of Toothpaste Is Right For You?
The toothpaste aisle seems to be overflowing with different options.
Organic, natural, conventional, the list goes on. Do you know how to pick the best option for you and your family? Here’s how to find your toothpaste soul mate.
Conventional toothpaste: Almost all conventional toothpaste contains abrasives (to help clean plaque off teeth), fluorides (to help prevent cavities) and surfactants (to help the toothpaste foam). Regular toothpaste may also contain artificial sweeteners such as saccharin to improve taste, artificial dyes for color, artificial flavors and preservatives to keep them stable.
Natural toothpaste: The main difference with natural toothpaste is that it does not contain artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors. Instead, it uses natural ingredients such as xylitol and stevia for sweetness, herbs, fruits and spices for flavor and naturally occurring titanium dioxide for a white color. They may or may not contain fluorides and some of the surfactants found in conventional toothpastes.
Alternative toothpaste: Some people make their own toothpaste by using natural ingredients such as baking soda, sea salt and hydrogen peroxide. Another store-bought alternative is to swish around oil in the mouth such as sesame oil or coconut oil, both of which have anti-bacterial and anti-plaque properties.
No matter the toothpaste, the most important thing is to brush twice a day, floss regularly and see your dentist twice a year.
