Summer is almost over and the start of the new school year is fast approaching. Are you ready? Have you completed your back to school shopping? Have you started implementing your school year routine? Have your kids gone to the dentist recently? When you want to set your kids up for success in the new school year, oral health is another thing to consider. It’s always best to book a visit to the dentist before the start of the year to assess their overall oral health and the ways to improve it if necessary. Check out our top tips for healthy teeth!

Brush. Brush. Brush.

Have your kids brush their teeth consistently for better oral health. It’s recommended to brush twice a day, usually before breakfast and after dinner. This way, it’s easy to remember and easy to fit into the school year routine. Also make sure your child is flossing regularly, as it’s important they’re removing the buildup of plaque that brushing can’t do alone.

Food/Drink Swaps

Instead of sugary foods, or salty foods like chips and crackers, opt for fresh fruits and veggies as snacks in your kid’s lunch. Energy drinks and sodas should also be swapped out for water or milk, as they don’t need the added sugar for both oral and overall health. It’s also important to check the shelf life of the items you’re putting in their lunches. Those foods with long shelf lives contain starch that can breed cavity-causing bacteria. These types of snacks are readily available at most schools, so it’s best not to add them to school lunches.

Be Aware

Sometimes, cavities are signaled with shooting pain. However, this is a sign that the cavity has become infected, not announcing the cavity itself. It’s also important to watch out for cracked or broken teeth if your child is active in sports. This is also true for kids with braces, like if a bracket falls off or if they’re not being cleaned properly.
